2 Kinds of Drivers

In the last few years we have interviewed and profiled more than 22,000 OTR drivers in carriers of all size and descriptions. We've discovered that 70% of them share a common profile. We call them Mainstreamers.

The other 30% of drivers have very unusual profiles. We call them Outliers.

60% of your turnover is coming from the 30% of drivers who are Outliers because your FMs are treating Outliers the way they treat Mainstreamers.

We will work with you to identify your Outliers and to teach your FMs and Load Planners how to handle Outliers in a special way.

Retention University
Your FMs need help connecting with their drivers. RU offers techniques in 20 minute workshops on the web.

You know that not everyone has the same personality, attitudes, and emotional maturity.

What happens when you treat everyone exactly the same? Some people get very offended!

In trucking there are 2 kinds of drivers (see the details on the left side of this page). If you treat Outliers as if they are Mainstreamers, they will feel alienated & misunderstood and they won't "connect" with their fleet manager. At the first difficulty on the job they will quit.

So what should we do?

  1. Identify the 30% of drivers who are Outliers.
  2. Teach the FMs and LPs who they are.
  3. Coach the FMs and LPs how to handle Outliers.
  4. Measure driver satisfaction every 90 days.
  5. Adjust our coaching based on driver satisfaction.

We have had tremendous success cutting turnover in half by teaching FMs how to handle Outliers.

Driver retention is simple . . . it's just not easy.

No More Mis-fits!

20% of driver turnover is a result of employing fleet managers who are incapable or unwilling to form personal connections with drivers who have special needs. And we know for a fact that 30% of all drivers are Outliers, the drivers who have special needs for social contact, who are ultra-sensitive to criticism, and who are emotionally immature.

You don't have to settle for mis-fits in the fleet manager job. We can help you find FMs who are great fits for the job.
